I am so excited! After putting our four-year-old through bike camp this summer, I finally got my bicycle out of our shed—after six years; there was rust, mould, and cobwebs on the thing!—and we found a decent one on sale for my hubby. Then, after a bit of searching, we invested in one of those trailer things where both our boys can sit and go for parent-powered ride. They were so thrilled with the first push-off that they giggled so hard they had to cover their mouths with their hands.

I had forgotten how much fun it is to ride a bike. When I took it in for a tune-up, I told the guy it just hadn’t been out for a while. A long while. Why not? He said. I had kids, I explained.

But what a blast. It’s so invigorating to feel the wind through your hair (once it passes the slits in your helmet) and so liberating to cover so much of your own neighbourhood so quickly. The boys were having so much fun they kept shouting “Wheeeeeee!!” and it made me want to do the same thing. So I did!

I highly recommend getting a trailer—assuming you have safe ground to travel on; there’s no way I’d take my kids in one of those on a busy street—and of course everyone in the gang has to wear a helmet.

Tis the season to find cycling equipment on sale, and there are still a few good weeks left to get in plenty of rides in before the weather turns really crappy.

It’ll make you feel like a kid again. And if you haven’t ridden a bike in a while, well, you know what they say...
