Anecdotes from a Modern Mom

 

We didn't have any trips planned for the summer--we'd rather travel in the off-season when it's less busy and less expensive--but alas we managed to do a last-minute jaunt. Spontaneity ain't easy with kids, but we successfully juggled a few balls and took off for the Oregon coast. The scenery is so spectacular here. Yet even when I'm facing the postcard-perfect Cannon Beach, the greatest view in the whole wide world is seeing my little guys so happy.

We celebrated our little guy’s second birthday this past weekend by eating fudgy chocolate cake outside our tent on a camping trip with dear friends who also have a two-year-old. Never mind the roasted marshmallows or the eagle we saw circling high above or the glacial-green of the river flowing nearby: The boys were most excited about our Lightning McQueen table cloth as well as Mater birthday hats we all wore, not to mention our chance sighting of the Space Station soaring overhead. Now that’s gotta be good luck.

So our little guy turns two soon, and he still doesn’t utter a single word. Every now and then we’ll hear something that distinctly sounds like “mama”, especially if he’s upset, but other than that, he’s happy to function—and he functions well—using little grunts and gestures. It’s peculiar but fascinating; the way he communicates is almost like a baby gorilla. Everyone tells us not to worry until he’s three.
